Several open source communities specializing in Health Information Technology (HIT) have developed in the last several years. These include Open Health Tools at the international level of participation and include the CONNECT, Direct Project, and Standards & Infrastructure Framework communities at the US level of participation. All of these communities utilize wikis and other collaboration tools to allow active participation on a daily basis. However, scope, governance and software developer participation differ. A review of these open source communities includes discussion on the practical use of this open source HIT software in the health industry.
