The HFOSS Project, begun in 2006, aims to help revitalize student interest in computing by recasting the software engineering curriculum so that it includes free and open source software (FOSS) development as a major theme. This talk will introduce the HFOSS Project and describe how it has been accomplishing these goals.
We will include many concrete examples of student involvement in FOSS development, identifying the several participating colleges, universities, and corporate partners. We will also show examples of the HFOSS Project’s many software accomplishments. Finally, we will identify key challenges to sustaining these initiatives in the long run, inviting discussion among attendees that will help inform the Project’s future planning.
